Members of Local Lodge 1628 Receives Certification Approval From the DOL For TAA and ATAA
1/12/2007
District 34 Business Representative Joe Gresham and Local Lodge 1628 President Mark Chema filed the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) and Alternative Trade Adjustment Assistance (ATAA) forms asking to get certification for the members that are and will be affected by layoffs at Lear Corporation located in Zanesville, Ohio.

Many of the mechanical switches has and will be moved out of the United States to Mexico and Taiwan effecting more than 300 workers at this time and more in the near future.

The HR Manager (Lynn Smith) has done a very good job working with the Union and coordinating this effort with the State Job and Family Services along with the Department of Labor.

Lear Corporation bought out the United Technology Corporation's (UTC) Division of the Automotive Group in May of 1999 and has struggled to make profits in many locations in the U.S. since then.

The Zanesville Plant has made mechanical and electrical Automotive input controls since 1963 when the Machinists Local Lodge 1628 was first chartered and is only one of four plants left in the electronics division after it has closed many of its plants in the U.S.
