Cleveland Rallies With Local 136312/20/2005
Marking the ratification of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights (including the right to join a union), trade unionists and community allies gathered around the nation and world on December 10th to support local fights for human rights.
IAM members and community leaders in the greater Cleveland area gathered in North Olmsted, Ohio with Local 1363 Directing Business Representative Phil Zannella, Mayor Thomas O'Grady, State Representative Dale Miller and Cleveland AFL-CIO Executive Secretary John Ryan. They all stood with IAM mechanics striking for recognition at Halleen Chevrolet. The four met with the General Manager to deliver a letter from the Greater Cleveland Workers Rights Board. They urged the company to participate in a process that would allow a settlement. Mayor O'Grady offered his assistance to bridge the gap. Cleveland AFL-CIO Executive Secretary John Ryan pointed out that community awareness of the dispute will take center stage if an agreement is not met.
Local 1363 Directing Business Representative Phil Zannella stated “The membership here at Halleen Chevrolet stands united in this fight to win a first contract and the full power of the IAM stands with them”.
On behalf of the Eastern Territory, I would like to thank all those who participated in this event. A special thanks to the members at Halleen Chevrolet and our elected community representatives.
